There are many options for a CMS to drive your site. The "big guys" are Joomla and Drupal. Wordpress is also among the most popular software out there, having started as a blogging tool and expanded its functionality to handle larger websites.

So what drives our decision-making? We evaluate software according to the following things (in this order):

  The most powerful software will be abandoned if it is not easy to use
  
  
• Design Flexibility
  We need to be able to make the software look like anything you want it to.
  
  
• Functional Extensibility
  What does it do out of the box? And what else can we make it do?
  
  
• Solid Code Base
  No software is bug-free, but the software needs to be stable and work as expected.
  
  
• Open-Source and Migratable
  Source code accessibility provides security, extensibility and freedom for the end user. By avoiding SaaS (Software As A Service) models, you are able to take your site to any server (and any developer) you wish.
   

For years, we found existing software failed too many of the tests above, so we built our own. Clients came to us having used these software packages complaining that they just couldn't get their site to do what they wanted. Some even paid us to manage their site because it was easier than figuring out the CMS they were provided!

Wordpress is a notable exception. It is solid and effective software for small websites, but was not effective for larger sites and/or custom functionality.
